Nuts and Bolts
Attendance/ Absences:
Please call the attendance line if your child will be absent at 503-356-2400, but it's helpful to email me as well.
Birthdays
We do not promote birthday parties or treats in the classrooms. Rationale: While we all love celebrations, birthday parties and treats take time away from instruction. In addition, some families feel obligated to bring treats even if it constrains their budgets; some students have food allergies or diabetes; the numerous birthday treats over the year focus on high sugar and fat intake and we are required to offer such treats less often in school. If you would like to recognize your child’s birthday by donating a book to your child's classroom, talk to your child's teacher.
Birthday party invitations: Please do not have your child distribute birthday invitations at school unless each child in the class receives one. We are not able to give out phone numbers and addresses. Most student information is listed in the school directory provided by the NRCO several weeks after school starts.

Standards
The state of Oregon outlines standards for curriculum in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. These standards are recommended by national groups and include the Common Core State Standards. Beaverton School District teachers address these standards and district grade level targets in planning educational experiences for their students.

Grading
Using our district's grading system, students are assessed on a scale of 1- 4. In first grade, you will not see day- to- day practice assignments formally scored, but unit assessment, exit tickets and other end assessment will have these scores.
4= above grade level expectations- exceeding
3= at grade level expectations, meeting
2= nearing proficiency- almost there
1= developing- still working on this skill

Going Home
If your child is going home in a way that is different than the regular routine, please send a note to school with your child. Transportation changes are noted in the office. If changes in transportation arise after 8:15, you must call the office to communicate this with me as I cannot always check my email messages during the day.
IRLA
Our reading assessment program is called the IRLA. Reading levels are assigned colors: yellow- green- blue- read- white- black. I will share more details about this at conferences next month.

Snack
Please help your child pack a healthy finger food snack that can be opened independently. Chips, cookies, and candy are not allowed as a classroom snack.
Toys
Toys are not allowed at school. This includes "extra school supplies" such as fun shaped erasers, and fancy pencils, etc...
Volunteers
I love using volunteers in our classroom! Volunteers are required to have an updated background check prior to coming into our classroom or joining us on a field experience. Please check at the office to make sure everything is updated! Thank you in advance for all of your help!!!
Water
Students are able to keep their water bottles on their desks as long as they don't become a distraction. Please send your child to school with a full water bottle each morning.
School Lunches
Please send meal account checks on the first day of school. You must have $ in your child's account if you would like them to purchase their meals at school. Please pay your child’s meal account by check whenever possible. Place your child’s first and last name on the check. Send all payments in an envelope marked with your child’s name, account number, teacher, and grade. If you have not completed paperwork for Free or Reduced Meals, we will be glad to send you an application. All applications and results are confidential.
